Application: choice edible, medicinal usage and compounds, research.

Characteristics: Small cream-white caps, strongly decurrent gills and a short central or eccentrical stem are characteristic. In culture this mushroom presents black droplets (called 'coremia') that might be easily confused with black mold contaminants.

Temperature Range: Mid-High: 70-80 (90) °F [18-24 (27) °C] fruiting temperature.

Recommended Substrate: straw, hardwood sawdust (cottonwood, oak, maple, sweetgum elm, beech, poplar).

Cellulose Decomposers: Straw & other agricultural waste products.

Agricultural waste products such as sugar cane bagasse, seed hulls, soybean roughage, banana plants, corncobs, peanut shells, grass, tea leaves, grape pumice, coffee husks, saguaro cactus, cotton waste, bamboo shoots, or cellulosic waste stream products such as paper, cardboard, textile waste, etc.

Recommended species:

Armilaria mellea, Auricularia auricular-judae, Calocybe indica, Dictyophora indusiata, Flammulina velutipes, Hypsizygous ulmarius Lepista nuda, Letinula edodes Straw, Pleurotus djamor, Pleurotus pulmonarius, Pleurotus ostreatus, Pleurotus tuber-regium, Stropharia rugoso-annulata, Volvariella volvacea .

Method:

Ideally this species is grown on straw and some agricultural wastes, which are low in lignin content. Pasteurize this substrate with ashes, hydrated lime, hot water, or any other method, after it has been chopped into 1-4 inch pieces. Soak the substrate for 2-12 hours depending on the pasteurization method used. Remove from water and cool and drain the substrate to no more than 80°F and whatever the saturation moisture content is for that material. Substrate is now ready for inoculation via grain spawn at a rate of 2%-10%, depending on the availability of spawn and the grower’s experience.

* It’s recommended to use a mesh basket or laundry bag to place the substrate in for easy removal after soaking or use a shower type single stage hydration/pasteurizing setup as show here: http://www.alohaculturebank.com/straw-lime-pasturization.pdf.
